The agricultural Green Revolution relied on novel techniques to enhance yield, primarily driven by chemicals. The ability to produce synthetic fertilizers and petroleum-based pesticides acted as the catalyst. This method prioritized non-crop aspects. Farmers based their decisions on an assessment of the requirements (Soil Chemistry) and potential threats (Pest and diseases). To promote sustainable agriculture, the emphasis should shift towards biology, prioritizing Soil Health and Plant Health.

Bancellas approach consists of a chronological 4 steps: For each of the four steps, adequate products are proposed to enhance the activity:

Invest

Investing in enhancing and maintaining a high level of soil health is the first step towards success. Products that increase the soil microbes activity are proposed – Prebiotic and probiotics.

Strengthen

A high level of plant health is a very good barrier for disease and pest damage. Products that will provide adequate nutrients, regulate plant energy use and manage stress are important for the plant to reach its full potential.

Prevent

Prevention strategies against pests and diseases should be put in place. Against insects, semio-chemicals (which include pheromones and insect food baits) are to be used. Against diseases, products that will trigger the plants inner response to synthesize defense phytohormones needs to be included in the crop cycle program. This step can be further enhanced by exogenous defense phytohormones.

Control

The decision to control pests and diseases should be guided by adequate knowledge of the tools to be used. Biopesticides and targeted pesticides versus broad spectrum pesticides are key tools to maintain the crop ecosystem.
